5 More Days!

ONLY 5 DAYS BEFORE OUR WORSHIP CELEBRATION

March 9th @ 7pm – pre service prayer at 6:30pm.  Start praying today that you will receive EVERYTHING the Holy Spirit has for you!  This night could change your life.  I’m already praying for you!

We had a great experience spreading the love at Carleton University handing out popcorn to eager students who waited in line, which gave us an opportunity to talk.   Imagine if Christians were known as the MOST loving people on the earth. Imagine if people came to Bethel and the Movement and said, “whoa – this is unreal – how can people love like this?  They only speak encouragement to each other – they serve each other, they care about the hurting and the poor, they came and talked to me and invited me into their community” – YES! I think that’s what Jesus had in mind when he said this, “Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”  John 13:35

Can we be this kind of group/church?

Don’t be weird – you don’t need to ask about whether you should have ham or Montreal smoked meat on your sandwich.

I don’t think any of us want to live a boring Christian life.  I’ve been there – and it’s rule laden, no miracles, little joy, full of complaining and eventually  doubt filled.   When we don’t learn to partner with the Holy Spirit – that’s exactly what we sign up for.  I think its so very easy to be flesh led Christians or so distracted by our crazy lives that we rarely ask God for direction. An example of this is dating.  Often people “play the field”  deciding to date based on looks or interests.  For the Christian dating isn’t like the  lottery . Who you end up with is the 2nd most important decision of our life, next to deciding to follow Jesus.  If you know Jesus your steps are ordered by God so we need to make decisions in partnership with Him.   Ask Him, “should I date this person?”  Why experience unnecessary heart break over and over again because we make our own flesh led decisions? God wants to lead us, show us what to do and how to do life. He wants us to live supernaturally. In the OT God spoke to individuals  at specific times and seasons through priests and prophets, but in the New Testatment everything changes.  We now have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit so now He can speak to us at any time. In Him we live and move and have our being. Throughout the NT  and throughout history we see the Spirit telling people where to God, what to do.

These scriptures are amazing.

1 Corinthians 2:6-16

6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
   what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[b]—
the things God has prepared for those who love him—

10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[c] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”[d]”But we have the mind of Christ.”
This passage is talking about how things are revealed to us by the Holy Spirit.

John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

How much more incredible would your life be and the life of those around you if we were Spirit led?

A spirit led church is the type of church God wants– a spirit led young adult ministry is God’s way. So how do we become this type of ministry?

We need to learn to partner with the Holy Spirit.

What happens if we don’t?

A lot of dumb decisions, and lots of people coming in and out of church and our lives without a God encounter. If we do things in the flesh –we are robbing people of meeting with God and we rob ourselves of making wise choices.

We can change that!

We must be Spirit led – dependent – Gal 3: 2-4 Let me put this question to you: How did your new life begin? Was it by working your heads off to please God? Or was it by responding to God’s Message to you? Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you weren’t smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it? Did you go through this whole painful learning process for nothing? It is not yet a total loss, but it certainly will be if you keep this up!

It’s my desire that in our daily lives and our services and our outreach and in our everything we see the demonstration of God’s power.  Without that, good music , a sermon and nice people won’t keep people coming back.  Without Him we can’t bring hope and life to people when we meet for coffee. It’s HIM – His manifest presence that provokes a longing to know Him and you and I can carry that. We can walk in Him, we can speak with Him, we can do what He says, we can hear from Him and live in Him.   Today talk to Him – ask Him to lead you, speak to you, and show you what to do.   Don’t be weird – you don’t need to ask about whether you should have ham or Montreal smoked meat on your sandwich.  But when it comes to people’s lives – ask – listen and watch the supernatural happen.  The normal Christian life is anything BUT boring – it’s incredible and it’s only a partnership away.

Pray your brains out!

James 5:16 says
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”   My paraphrase –  “pray your brains out – it works.”

At our launch we talked about how a movement moves.  What you’ve heard me share with you is just the beginning of what I believe God is going to do through us. I’m asking you to join with me and the leadership team to pray for our upcoming service at Carleton.  What can you pray for? Please take some time EVERY DAY until the 10th to pray that we will carry the presence of God into the cafe and on campus.  Pray that everything is done with excellence.  Pray that this opens another door.  Pray that students feel loved immediately.  Pray that we make connections that last.

Rooster Cafe is in the University Centre on the 4th floor (top floor). There is a parking lot just outside of the UC and it is paid parking. If anyone would like free parking they can get it across from Bronson at Brewer Park and then walk over. From the parking lot just walk through the doors and up the stairs then Rooster’s is on your left once you get to the top.

Also – space is limited!  So please give your seat up for visitors – we all can sit on the floor if we have to! Let’s make sure we honour our guests.

On Tuesday at 11:45 I’m going to the campus to pray for 30 minutes – if you want to join me meet me at the University Centre or email me to meet me at Bethel to head over together.   Please let me know you are coming!

Dreaming BIG and believing in you!
Pastor Sandra

Are you looking?

girl-1246525_1920.jpg

Every Sunday I meet new young adults at Bethel.  This week I met Meagan and Astrid. Astrid is from Cameroon and doing her Masters at UofO.  Meagan has a government job in Ottawa and is looking for a new church home.

Living overseas I felt first hand what it was like to attend a church and not be in leadership.  I found that people are usually friendly but not many are willing to be your friend.   It’s not easy to move to a new country, new city and a new church but this is the reality of many young adults.  How can we reach out to people who are feeling alone, uncertain, and in need of a loving community?

It’s super easy to come every week, occupy your seat, hang out with friends and go home. It’s normal, but a Movement isn’t normal. It’s different. Are you looking?

At our launch we talked about how a movement moves, blazes trails, goes where others won’t, looks out, and loves people. This week I encourage you to look around you – are there people around you who need to be loved?  Is there someone sitting alone at work or at school? Are you looking?   For some of us this is a huge stretch – look around and actually go talk to people?  YES!  I know this isn’t easy – but we can be different. In fact even in our own church – every single week I see new young adults sitting alone.   Let’s be a movement and break out of our friendship circles and go sit with someone.  Your actions can actually change someones life. This gives you the opportunity  to be the tangible presence of a loving God in a persons life in that moment.  It’s walking out your faith, giving instead of receiving, pushing yourself to do something different. Are you looking?  The young adults at Bethel are incredible and I know if we think differently we can act differently.

Matt 10: 43 This is a large work I’ve called you into, but don’t be overwhelmed by it. It’s best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won’t lose out on a thing.”

A movement moves – let’s move!
